20th June 2010 marks the beginning of my housemanship. First day at work at public sector needing me to report to Kedah State Health Department (Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Kedah) first before heading to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar.
Almost all close friends of mine knew that my driving skill is “terhad dan sendirian berhad”. Just don’t know why. I just couldn’t coordinate my hands, legs, eyes and brain all at the same time well. Lacking practice? I think it must be the only reason ’coz I didn’t drive much after getting my driving license few years back. By hook or by crook, I need to drive alone in Alor Setar when working and therefore the intensive driving lessons from my parents and both my aunt and uncle during the holiday. Even I had mentally prepared for it.
Thinking that I had to drive to Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Kedah this morning, I slept early yesterday night. Perhaps I am so used to waking up late during the holiday, I woke up late in the morning! It was already 6.45am and I need at least an hour (with my speed) to reach the destination from my aunt’s place at Gurun! At the end, my uncle and aunt instantaneously decide to be my driver of the day. I am so THANKFUL! Without my uncle speeding, I should have been late reaching there. Fuh!
Waited for almost an hour before able to meet Dr. Zaiton, the personnel incharged in housemen training in Kedah State. A nice person who loves to share us her amazing stories. And she is a UKM graduate too! Super duper senior I would say. After spending almost 2 hours there, we received our posting letter and headed to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah for reporting. It was quite fast and I did not wait long before getting our orientation.
During the session, I just knew that there are so many different forms to be filled in! Haha. Never thought of that. Really! Being a first poster, we were allowed to choose a friend and a posting. I paired up with Soo Shu and we got O&G as the first posting again (O&G was my first posting in 3rd year and final year too!). We were allowed to dismiss for us to settle the KWSP and some other matters after that before we need to gather again at 4pm to check on houseman quarters status. Thank God my uncle and aunt were around just now. Without them, I think I would lost in the city, finding the buildings which are all blocks and streets away.
Indeed, I am more worried on the accommodation part. Really hope that I can at least being placed in the quarters first or temporarily if they are all fully occupied, as I am totally have no idea where to find a rented house in Alor Setar in such a short time. And it’s even more impossible for me to travel everyday to and fro Gurun. That’s really far especially on tagging. O&G as the first posting pulak tu?! Hah. Thankfully, I was so relieved when I was told that I was entitled for a room. (Most importantly, it’s not the maid’s room of the apartment!)
I went to look at my apartment and room once I got the keys. It is a nice place! Spacious and with a great paddy field scenery just outside my window. And I have met my one of my housemates, Dr. Dzakirin, introduced myself to him before going back to Gurun. I found he is quite friendly (as far as I know now). Hope the other senior is fine too!
With the discretion of the hospital’s Deputy Director, 10 of us have an extra day off on tomorrow before starting off with our 2-day Blood Bank posting on Tuesday. He is very considerate in allowing those not able to get a room in the quarters to find rooms/houses outside on this day. And I shall utilize tomorrow to do some shopping in stocking up some groceries and REST! After a hectic day.
With all the happening, I am very grateful. Thank God for His perfect arrangement on me. And everything He has done for me today. Seemed like it has been well planned and I just sail through it smoothly! Thank you Lord.
Well now, everything has already started! I will work for it! Definitely I will. Do wish me luck and pray for me in helping the needy – my future patients.
Times flies, I have ended my two and a half months of my holiday and will be starting working as a house officer soon!
Today is already the second night I spent in Puteri Resort Ayer Keroh, Melaka for my induction before being confirmed as a government servant. And in less than four days to come, I shall report myself to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar for my 2-year housemanship. A new chapter of my life has now begun! Wish me luck and I think I really need lots of it.
P.S. Kinda nervous too. Wondering how will it be?
